Student Showcase at Wight Biennial

LOS ANGELES—While exhibitions regularly showcase international artists (the Whitney Biennial

immediately comes to mind), none had organized something similar for graduate art students—until 1997. Mary Kelly, then-chair of the Department of Art at UCLA, organized the first Wight Biennial, an international exhibition showcasing the works of student artist from around the world.

The latest exhibition, curated by graduate students form UCLA—largely considered the power art school in the nation—runs from November 9 to 30 a the Wight Gallery in the new Eli and Edythe Broad Art Center on the campus of UCLA. With the works of 20 artists from France, Cuba, Mexico, England and Germany, as well as from the United States, the biennial displays paintings, sculpture, works on paper, and other works.
