Web Exclusive: Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Launches Cell Phone Art

By: Logan Troutman

January 2008

“Mini-Masterpieces for Your Phone” is the tagline, and cell phone art is the topic. MFA Boston is the first museum in the world to promote art via cell phone. MFA Mobile allows users to download art works from the museum onto their cell phone’s backdrop screen, or wallpaper. The museum offers over 50 art works to choose from, and they range from classic paintings to ancient Egyptian sculptures.

The MFA Mobile program appeals to everyone, from the art enthusiast to the amateur. Now anyone can carry pictures on their cell phone’s wallpaper with the click of button.
Launched in September 2007, the program is already generating positive feedback, according to public relations at the museum.

Which artworks are available for download? “We chose popular pieces from our collection,” a spokesperson for the museum explained. “Works that people enjoy viewing at the museum and those that are frequently purchased in reproductions.”

Downloading the wallpaper is simple—it can be done online or through a text message. Customers can choose to buy a single wallpaper image or to become a subscriber, allowing 5 wallpapers per month for $4.99. Single wallpapers are $1.99.
